21 Rules

Blackjack is one of the oldest and more popular card games around. The player advantage is higher in blackjack than in just about any other casino game. In Nevada, blackjack is called 21 but the game still follows the same rules as any other form of blackjack. 21 (blackjack) rules are easy to learn and the basics of the game are simple.

Basic Blackjack Rules

The object of 21 (blackjack) is to get your hand as close to a value of 21 without going over, or going bust, while still having a higher hand than the dealer’s. If your hand goes over 21 or the dealer has a higher hand than you, you lose. In 21, each card has a value. Number cards have the same value as their number. Face cards such as Kings, Queens, and Jacks are all worth 10, and Aces are worth either 1 or 11.

Rules For Playing Blackjack

21 Rules - Blackjack RulesA blackjack table is curved and seats up to six players. If you are playing by typical 21 rules, then the house is using six or eight decks of 52 cards that are dealt out of a box called a “shoe”. Before any cards are dealt, each player places an initial bet. The players are then dealt two cards face up and the dealer gets one card face up and one card face down, called the hole card. Each player will either hit to be dealt more cards or, if they are satisfied with their hand, they may stand. If a player does not bust, once they are satisfied with their hand, then the dealer flips over their hole card. Typical 21 rules require a dealer who has a 16 value hand or lower to draw another card. If they have a 17 or higher, they will stand.

21 rules also state that if a player gets a 21 hand in their first two cards (an Ace and a 10-value card) then this is called a blackjack.  If a player gets a blackjack, then they win one and a half times their bet. But if the dealer also gets a blackjack, then it is a push or a tie. In this instance, you will get your bet back.

If a player gets a higher hand than the dealer, then they win an amount equal to their bet. If a player has a lower hand than the dealer, they lose their entire bet. If the dealer busts, then all players who did not bust win.

In blackjack games where the cards are dealt out of a shoe, then you are not allowed to touch the cards. The dealer will handle all of the cards. In games where the cards are handled by the players, you may only handle them with one hand and the cards must remain over the table at all times. Anyone just starting out at blackjack should probably stick to the shoe games at first.

21 Rules - Insurance

Blackjack Rules21 rules have many options and side bets that the player can take advantage of. When the dealer’s face up card is an Ace, the dealer is allowed to peek at their hold card to see if they have a blackjack. The dealer will offer the players insurance, which is a bet on whether or not the dealer has a blackjack. This takes place before any other actions by the players. The wager amount equals your original bet and if you win, the payout is at 2:1 odds. This is pretty standard in all blackjack rules variants.

21 Rules - Surrender

If you think the dealer has a better hand, you can surrender, or give up your hand and get back half of your bet. Some casinos do not allow surrender if the dealer has a blackjack. In those instances, you lose your entire bet unless you also have a blackjack. If you choose to surrender and you have a blackjack, then it’s called a late surrender and is treated like a push.

21 Rules - Doubling Down

If a player thinks their hand will beat the dealer’s, then they may double their original bet. If a casino follows the standard 21 Blackjack rules, then they will let a player double down on any two cards. However, some casinos require you to have an opening hand of 9, 10, or 11. When you double down, you must take one extra card and you cannot take more than one. Doubling down is a good option if you have a strong hand.

21 Rules - Splitting

When your two initial cards are of the same value, you can split them into two separate hands and place a second wager on the new hand. The second bet must be the same size as the first bet. The dealer will give you another card for each hand. Each hand is played one after another. If you split Aces, then you are only allowed to take one more card for each hand. According to 21 rules, if you are dealt a 10 value card after splitting aces, the hand is not considered a blackjack so you don’t get the blackjack bonus win.

21 Rules - Other Options and Terms

21 rules have a few other terms you need to be familiar with. Even Money refers to when you have a natural blackjack and you decide to cash in at a 1:1 rate because the dealer’s up card is an Ace. A Hard Hand is a hand that only has one value. If the hand has an Ace which is only valued at 1, it is also considers a Hard hand. A Soft Hand is a hand that has an Ace that can be valued as either 1 or 11.

When it comes to blackjack rules, some casinos have their own house rules so it’s always a good idea to know what they are beforehand. There are also several different variations of Blackjack that use different number of decks, re-splitting of Aces is allowed, dealer must stand on 16 or hit on 17, and some other blackjack rules. It may sound like a lot but after you play the game for a few hands, the rules are pretty simple.
